We live in a connected world. There are few instances where a device powered by a battery does not have an effect on our lives. This is in large part due to improved technology that offers strong, longer-lasting batteries. However, without the ability to recharge and reuse batteries, our world would be awash in discarded, dead batteries. Life would be significantly different without rechargeable batteries and the technology to charge them. Battery charger technology allows for the life of the battery to be strengthened, so they can function in whatever environment needed, including mission critical situations such as ensuring military preparedness. Such is the case with the submarine battery.
Most tend to think of nuclear reaction as the main power source for modern submarines. While nuclear power is prominent, all submarines nuclear or traditionally powered still rely on batteries. Electrical equipment is often run off the batteries and power from the diesel engine, or nuclear reactor is used to charge the batteries. In cases of emergency, the batteries may be the only source of electrical power to run the submarine. Batteries obviously need battery chargers. While there are on-board chargers, there are also chargers that sit dockside at many ports and shipyards for the purpose of charging, discharging, and even testing/simulating a submarine battery source. Some are as large as a pickup truck and charge up to 1MW (megawatt) of batteries. By charging and discharging the batteries, the life of the submarine battery is extended and ensures that electrical systems functions properly when hundreds of miles from port deep beneath the ocean.
PCTI is no stranger to the requirements for submarine battery chargers. We have made battery charging and discharging equipment for submarines and other applications since 1994. Our first submarine battery discharger was manufactured for the U.S. Navy’s largest unmanned submarine. Because few possess our sophisticated technology, countries from around the world come to use for our expertise. For example, we helped the Royal Dutch Navy with a large project to replace all their aging battery chargers (35-40 years old) with state-of-the-art chargers for their fleet, improving their infrastructure with the latest technology and performance, as well as greatly improved efficiency. We currently are working on a project for the Ecuadorian Navy.
