The world’s requirement for electrical energy, particularly renewable energy, has made the demand for power electronics more essential than ever before. Today’s focus on providing clean energy and cutting back on carbon emissions has led to an increased demand for new types of power electronics used in power conversion equipment.
On August 28th, 1991, Mihai and Cathy Chis incorporated Power Conversion Technologies, Inc. Since then, PCTI has continued to grow and stay on the forefront of the latest technologies in power electronics. 25 years later, PCTI continues to power military and industrial customers across the globe.
On August 14, 2003, a huge blackout took hold of the Northeastern United States. Rural areas, suburban towns, and entire dense metropolitan areas were thrown into darkness, eventually reaching more than 50 million people. Once the lights came back on, power operators discovered that the massive event had been caused by a single generator plant in Ohio.
At PCTI, we have always been dedicated to innovation. This is especially true when it comes to digital signal processing technology, or DSP. The DSP is a technology used in several industries, including power electronics controls; it’s a specialized microprocessor with an architecture optimized for the operational needs of digital signal processing.
The systems and machines of our world depend on power electronics for the ability to run efficiently and sustainably. Power electronics is the application of solid-state electronics for the control and conversion of electric power. It applies to both the systems and products involved in converting and controlling the flow of electrical energy, allowing the electricity needed for everyday products to be delivered with maximum efficiency in the smallest and lightest package.
PCTI is pioneering the use of DSP (digital signal processing) in all of our products and is proudly introducing our sixth generation of using DSP control. This new generation uses the Texas Instruments TMS320F28M36, which combines C2000 floating point DSP and Cortex M3 ARM into one single chip.
Sometimes when designing or specifying equipment for use in a particular field, the price is the most important factor. Perhaps the application is not very intensive, or use is only occasional, or not a very stringent application. Other times, performance is paramount, in situations of high intensity, where dependability is key, and environments are harsh or demand a high degree of resiliency. It is this latter situation that we’re interested in at PCTI, as we provide several types of high power equipment to the U.S. Military.

The summer came to an end with the Union declaring victory over the Confederacy. Over the past 148 years, military technology has evolved in a way that Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee likely couldn’t have imagined. It’s certain that even the most visionary veterans of the Civil War couldn’t have imagined the sophistication of fighter aircraft and helicopters that exist today. Power Conversion Technologies’ first orders were aircraft ground support DC power supplies.
